Occupational Therapists help individuals get back to doing what they want to do. Occupational therapists can work with individuals with physical injuries, cognitive impairments, psychosocial dysfunction, mental illness, and developmental or learning disabilities. Occupational therapists evaluate the whole individual by looking at the transaction between client factors (values, beliefs, spirituality, mental function, sensory function, etc.), performance skills (motor skills, process skills, social interaction skills), environment/context, and performance patterns (habits, routines, roles, rituals) in order to promote, establish/restore, maintain, or modify the task to enable participation in desired life activities. In addition, occupational therapists can focus on the prevention of the potential barriers to participation in desired activities (AOTA, 2014).

Areas of particular interest for children and families include:
- fine motor and handwriting,
- gross motor and coordination difficulties
⁃ Picky eating / using utensils
⁃ Sensory processing

Growing up on the South Shore of Montreal in a small rural community where my family was the only English speaking, life was not always easy. To make matters more challenging, my parents raised their family in what was deemed unconventional for the times. As a result of this “unique” upbringing, my views of myself, my community, and the world around me were expanded to recognize life is more than only what I have experienced, more than what I think I know.

Having a child of my own further changed my perspective of the world and the lessons I wanted him to learn from me. To show kindness and compassion to those who are in need, to listen with no judgment to those who live life differently than my own. The importance of recognizing that all living things are entitled to the necessities of life, and the strength that is required to reach out when you need help.

My favorite quote:

“What is to give light, must first endure burning” -Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor, physician, and psychiatrist.

This is my vision for myself, my son, and my clients: To live by these words and approach all with the respect and empathy they deserve.

I believe that clients are the experts in their own lives, and it is a privilege to be invited to share in a child, youth, or family’s journey toward wellness. I also believe that a successful therapeutic experience begins with a strong therapeutic relationship, both with the identified client, but also with parents/caregivers. Engaging with parents/caregivers is an essential piece of my practice as a means of supporting the positive changes and discoveries children/youth make in their sessions.

I am a lifelong learner, always seeking to expand my knowledge and enhance my capacity to work with young children and their families by training in various early intervention programs. I have taken training in Circle of Security, Play Therapy, Adlerian Play Therapy, and Theraplay. I have also completed training in sensorimotor psychotherapy techniques, ethics and consent, non-suicidal self-injury, suicide intervention, and group therapy. I am a registered Internationally Credentialed Sandtray Therapist (ICST) and I am currently working towards becoming a Registered Play Therapist.

Since then, I have practiced as a Clinical Therapist in Canada’s public Mental Health and Addictions system, both in Nova Scotia and British Columbia.
